Pete Bentham & The Dinner Ladies
Pete Bentham & the Dinner Ladies - Concert Square
The song is called 'Concert Square' and it's from our forthcoming 4 track vinyl EP 'Songs From The Psychedelic Village' on Antipop Records, which are all songs based on the theme of unseen/underground Liverpool, which is our antidote to the usual over sentimental way Liverpool is written about, in songs such as 'Ferry Across The Mersey'. The songs are not meant to portray Liverpool in a positive or negative way, just to be realistic and to sing about things that might not normally get written about.
The song 'Concert Square' is probably meant to be 90% funny and 10% serious. I took my elderly parents into town a few years ago and we had a coffee in Concert Square about midday. It was quite pleasant and sedate and my mum said, "Oh this is nice spot, isn't it". I remember thinking, "Yeah, wait till it gets dark". The song is about how having a coffee in Concert Square in the day is a bit like having a picnic in a clearing in the jungle. Then gradually the wildlife and the danger starts to surround you as it gets later. Most of the time the place isn't really that bad but it can be a bit lairy. So I suppose the song is also about getting older and realising some things aren't for you any more.
